Efforts to create, capture, and edit drawings (also called drawings or layouts) using an electronic medium have existed as early as the 1960s, with the development of graphics terminals and wire-frame, block-diagram and vector-graphics software applications. With the introduction of affordable personal computers in the 1980s, the standardization of common 2D and 3D graphics file formats, and the development of color graphics capabilities, CAD software was developed for the desktop, allowing for collaboration among multiple users and the exchange of 3D models and drawings between users.

Development of AutoCAD began in 1979, when a group of engineers at a United States military contractor were asked to create a system that would allow users to create architectural drawings. Engineers Paul Brown, Ken Trinkle, Pat Hagenbuch, and others worked with Autodesk software engineers to develop a system that could take the 2D images created on their mainframe computer systems and create a model and allow them to move and manipulate the model as if they were creating a physical model. In 1981, Autodesk began distributing the first version of AutoCAD on floppy disk.

AutoCAD has since become the industry leader in desktop CAD software. In 2005, Autodesk acquired Alias|Wavefront, a CAD application vendor. In 2011, Autodesk introduced AutoCAD LT, which became its most cost-effective desktop CAD software. In 2012, Autodesk introduced AutoCAD WS, a mobile-first product designed for users on the go.

AutoCAD’s functionality has expanded to address the needs of non-architectural users, as well as users who make mobile or web-based drawing changes. In 2010, Autodesk introduced the Family Drawing Planner, a feature that allows a user to manage drawings across a network or on mobile devices. AutoCAD includes tools that automatically sync changes made on mobile devices to the desktop software, a feature that other CAD companies call “Cloud Collaboration”.

Functional components

AutoCAD integrates several types of components into each project. The graphically-oriented components are used to create and manipulate model geometry, whereas the program’s database-oriented components store model geometry, dimensions, and reference data.

AutoCAD also includes several “views”, each of which displays different information about the model geometry or dimensions. Each view is designed to address a specific need. A user can switch between these views using the Commandline.

It is also possible to create layers within layers using the product user interface (PRUI). This allows all of the capabilities of a sub-layer to be accessed from one interface and all other layers (layers within layers) to be accessed from another interface.

AutoCAD has three ways to draw topological representations of objects:
The traditional (Topo) display shows an object as a series of connected lines (or polygons) and with the ability to add dimensions.
