What Is AutoCAD?
AutoCAD is an industrial-design-CAD (IDCAD) application that enables designers and engineers to create 2D and 3D drawings, such as flowcharts, diagrams, and models. In addition, it enables engineers to perform tasks such as importing and editing 3D models, creating drawings based on those models, and performing CAD calculations. Users of AutoCAD can export drawings to other file formats (e.g., AutoCAD-based mechanical engineering model formats such as Parasolid) for translation and usage.
AutoCAD uses a native CAD graphical user interface (GUI). This means that users can access many commands without requiring a mouse or other pointing device. Instead, users manipulate drawings using various icons and options on a screen, which look similar to graphical menus found in many other apps.
How Does AutoCAD Work?
AutoCAD, like other CAD programs, includes objects that can be manipulated as entities in 2D and 3D. These objects are rendered, or displayed, on the screen and can be selected, moved, and rotated. In contrast to most other CAD programs, AutoCAD uses a native GUI that organizes the entities into a set of trees that display different information when selected. For example, if you select the plane object, you are shown a list of planes in the drawing. Selecting a plane is like selecting any other object in AutoCAD.
AutoCAD displays a drawing window on the screen and in which the CAD entities can be placed. You can edit the objects, which can be created, edited, or deleted, and modify the CAD entities, including changing their properties. You can also place objects on the screen or change their properties, such as color, lighting, and position.
AutoCAD users are familiar with the basic or most common types of entities: line, arc, circle, polyline, circle, polyline, spline, freeform, block, text, and dimension. You also can create objects, such as shells, fillets, and joints.
Before CAD programs, CAD users used command lines (e.g., GetFeatureOnEntity, ExistOnEntity, etc.). AutoCAD uses a native GUI, which is similar to the command line. AutoCAD prompts users to enter commands when a certain context is entered, such as when a CAD entity is selected. AutoCAD uses “context sensitive” commands that allow

The Zebra Hi-Speed USB 3.0 scanner is a feature of AutoCAD 2011 and newer. This feature reads DXF files on the scanner, sends it back to AutoCAD, and converts it into a native layer and other drawing objects.
Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM)
The CAM software component of AutoCAD is a module based on the AutoLISP language that provides software-based tools to perform large number of 2D and 3D operations in a single interface. The two most common features of AutoCAD’s CAM are object assembly and plotter. Object assembly is used to create and manipulate assemblies of multiple geometric entities (e.g. walls, doors, trusses, columns, beams, and roofs). It can be used to create assemblies of individual parts (e.g. door knobs) as well as assemblies of any number of parts, using assembly parameters such as gaps, wall thickness, material thickness, and edge reduction.
Object options (known as “custom options” in earlier versions) are available to customize the behavior of drawing objects (e.g. importing CAD data). Object options include:
Object options in 2D
Object options in 3D
3D object options include:

AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT have separate applications for creating digital art. Unlike most CAD software, AutoCAD can import and export art objects, either as DXF or DWG files.
Notable 3D applications that have incorporated AutoCAD 3D functionality include:
SketchUp by Google
Autodesk Virtual Worlds
Blender by Blender Foundation
Maya by Autodesk
Ornatix Reality by Autodesk
AutoCAD Map 3D
AutoCAD Pipe Tracer
AutoCAD Electrical Construction 2D
AutoCAD Electrical Construction 3D
AutoCAD Electrical PNMA
AutoCAD Civil 3D
AutoCAD Furniture 3D
AutoCAD Electrical Surveying
