James Hickson (1793–1866) was a Cornish physician, anatomist and medical writer.
Life
Hickson was born at Penrose, Cornwall, in 1793. He was the son of John Hickson, and a member of a Quaker family. His father was also a physician and carried on business at Morwenstow in the same county. James was educated at an academy in Truro, and from there became the pupil of Dr. W. H. Harris, a well-known physician in that town. He then went to the University of Edinburgh, where he attended the lectures of the anatomist John Bell, and where, in 1815, he took the degree of MD.
In 1816 Hickson took the degree of M.D. in medicine, and in 1819 that of LL.D. in natural philosophy. He then entered the army, and obtained the rank of lieutenant. He then studied chemistry at Glasgow and returned to Cornwall, where he practiced as a physician.
Hickson died at Morwenstow, Cornwall, on 19 February 1866.
Works
Hickson published several papers on the anatomy of the viscera, his last work being the Principles of Comparative Anatomy, 1858. He was also a contributor to the Medical Gazette, the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons, and other medical periodicals.
Family
Hickson married Elizabeth Anne, daughter of Thomas Cummings of Exeter. His sister Anna was the wife of Thomas Tresham, of Bodmin.
