Highlight.js is a syntax highlighter designed to work with quite a few programming languages and that functions equally well on the server and in the browser. According to the developer, the tool works with any markup, supports over 180 languages and does not rely on any framework. In fact, the app automatically detects the language you are currently using and, in case it is not the one you are using, there are numerous 3rd party plugins for this purpose.
As previously mentioned, the tool works in the browser or web workers and hence, can help you prevent freezing windows, especially when dealing with large chunks of code. To get started in the browser, all you need to do is link to the library along with one of the styles and calling. Following the linking, you should be able to find and highlight code inside of the <pre><code> tags. If the language is not automatically detected, then you can specify it in the class attribute.
The utility allows you to assign an initial value for a data value of variable, meaning that you can add any custom initialization you prefer. You can customize when it should be highlighted and when using the configure and highlightBlock functions.

This library provides a comprehensive syntax highlighter that runs in the browser or on the server, in a Web Worker.
Syntax highlighting is a method by which text written in any language is automatically given a certain background color, font, and so on, depending on what it is, i.e. code, quotations, comments, etc.

You can also specify the level of syntax the block should be highlighted. This is quite helpful, especially if you’re highlighting code on a page that needs to be read in big chunks. You can define the syntax level by using the highlighterConfig property, using the value you want. In the case of Objective-J, you can set the value to 5.
Also, it can take up any tag on a page, even if it is nested inside other tags, like.highlight,.highlight.js,.highlight.rouge or.rouge.
Check out these methods to see how highlighting is done in the library:

highlighter.configure: This sets the default config options for the highlighting
highlighter.addConfig: This allows you to specify additional config options for the highlighting
highlighter.highlightBlock: This highlights the specified text.
highlighter.unhighlightBlock: This unhighlights the specified text.

Additionally, you can get a list of all the available language names and then choose the one you’re most interested in, based on the list. The script needs the language in the class attribute:

Then, you can use the highlightBlock() method. For example, the following will highlight the entire content of the page:

Additional notes:

The library needs webworker support, which can be easily enabled by placing the script before the end of the tag.
The library can also be used on the server, by placing the script before the end of the tag.
The original syntax highlighting library does not support less, which makes sense, since this is generally a CSS preprocessor. However, there is a plugin for it. You can find the instruction on how to get it up and running by following this link.

Highlight.js 5.5.2020

highlightBlock: function ( block, i ) {
block.id = “slick_highlight_block_” + block.id;
return “”;

hiliteText: function ( text ) {
// text here is a variable in this case
return text;

and in javascript
H = highlight.highlightBlock(H, 1);

enableAutoClose: true

H = highlight.highlightBlock(H, 1);

enableAutoClose: true

How it works:

Configure –
you can make sure to enable auto-closing, as that would make your code better readable
Hilite Text –
function to highlight the current line of text to be hilited.
The function can return anything you like.
enableAutoClose: true

This is what configure does. It is basically informing the function that we need the functionality that highlightBlock already provides

The highlighting can be enabled or disabled, along with the introduction of variables and blocks. In addition to setting the defaults for the algorithm, you can also set the type of colors in the theme.

Create your own color palette, using hex or RGB codes, and it will be used in a color map, allowing you to create any color you want. To improve the process of choosing a color, highlight.js has many pre-defined themes available, as well as various typography and size support.

To use the tool in the browser or in the server, you need to use the inline syntax or script loading, or to download highlight.js and keep it on the hard disk.
