The world is in turmoil. The people of Arkigul have been forced out of their home planet and are living in exile on the planet Fornar. Ola and Alwyn are two Arkiguls who are given the treatment and sent to Fornar, thinking they will live out their new lives as slaves. The colony ship Arkigul returns to its home planet after five years, the same time as their parents. The Arkigulians have rebuilt the space colony, but they have not changed their policy of removing their people from the planet. Before returning to the planet, the Arkigulians of an upper caste stay on the space station in orbit around Fornar. Meanwhile, the people of Arkigul who have been given the treatment are now passing unnoticed as slaves. They work in factories and make objects that the humans need, but even so the humans feel no responsibility towards them. Alwyn and Ola do not know what happened to their parents.
