The thyroid hormone receptor (TR) is a member of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily that is activated by thyroid hormones, including thyroxine and triiodothyronine. The classical TRs regulate important biological processes during development, and, in adult life, are involved in cell differentiation, lipid, energy metabolism and inflammation. Recently, the TRs have become important targets in the development of new drugs, particularly in cancer therapy. Thyroid hormones regulate the metabolism of cancer cells and the synthesis of cancer-related proteins; in addition, they regulate the proliferation of cancer cells. Inhibition of the TR
