When it comes to choosing the best Git GUI or Git manager, it’s safe to say that you’re not exactly short on options. Most of them (GitHub Desktop, GitKraken, SmartGit, SourceTree, etc.) do a remarkable job of allowing developers of all levels to manage code, manage repositories, and perform a great deal of other useful Git operations from a user-friendly interface.
Thermal enters the Git GUI market as a very interesting open-source alternative
Enter Thermal, a very simplistic and quite practical Git graphical user interface for Windows, macOS, and Linux that allows you to do everything that’s mentioned above. At this point, you might be wondering why it might be worth to spend a bit of extra time to learn to use Thermal (even though the learning curve is not at all steep).
The answer is quite simple: while most of the world’s best Git GUIs offer a lot of features and, ultimately, a lot of convenience, they are not exactly customizable. Thermal promises to offer its users the same level of convenience but with extra usability and “hackability.”
Remarkably user accessible
The app’s GUI is extremely well made and looks right at home on any modern OS, including Windows 10. From the app’s main workspace, you can add, initialize, clone, or create repositories, modify files, commit changes, as well as inspect various previous commits, stashes, and remote repositories.
This can be achieved from both the toolbar which encompasses controls such as commit, pull, push, fetch, and access to the Settings section and the sidebar where you can find all the items involved in the repo and get detailed information on each one of them.
From the Settings section, you can update the name of repositories, toggle repository various repo-related features (such as commit and remote).
Conclusion
While it may not boast the same level of features as some of its paid counterparts, Thermal offers almost everything that an amateur or beginner developer needs in order to manage Git repositories.

Thermal is the best Git GUI tool ever.

I would have to agree with this review. Thermal does pretty much everything I want it to do. It allows me to drag and drop files between branches and to commit, branch, and shelve them to a specific branch. It also allows me to clone a remote repository. It’s a lot like SmartGit or Magit, but I much prefer Thermal because it is very lightweight and very easy to use.

Thermal Description:

Thermal is easy to use, and is a pleasure to work with. It is a powerful tool that is extremely user friendly and intuitive.

Thermal Description:

Thermal is a complete Git front end that takes an extremely minimalist approach to front end. There is no fancy UI or anything other than functionality in this app. The idea is that the app can get out of the way and let you use the git functionality without worrying about what is happening behind the scenes. Thermal uses the GitRepos system developed by Nyla, which gives you a repo on the disk with your changes under it. You can do all the standard branch operations like create, merge, and checkout. You can even commit, uncommit, and push and pull from remote repos. It even gives you nice color coding for your repo.

Thermal Description:

Fun learning curve with the initial setup, but once set up, is ultra-easy to use. As mentioned above, in some ways it is more of a command-line interface than a typical front-end. Like many other Git GUI’s, you have the standard Git commit/branch/update/push/pull/merge, but it will even let you do things like stage/unstage changes or complete a staged file and commit. If you want more functionality, you can set up a wrapper script to run it from the command line.

This is the best app I have seen for Windows. It is very easy to use and has great features.

Hey guys,
So I have a question. I have a bunch of 8gb SD cards (in different sizes) that contain my clone’s project for my github account. I am wondering if there is a way to consolidate these files into one SD card and git clone them once I get this sorted?

When I clone repos via the github desktop app I tend to clone them to the desktop folder. To do this you can hit the clone. The problem that this creates is that all of those repos are on the desktop now, but I would like them to be integrated into another folder instead, preferably my dropbox folder.

AFAIK there is no built in support for cloning into dropbox in github desktop as it happens from the desktop which is what we want here.I am looking for a solution to this problem.

A direct approach might be to use git remote and github desktop to ssh into the desktop and reclone the repos into dropbox there, but that’s not what we want.

Is there a way to do this from git?

Also, you can use git clone –depth x $ORIGIN to reference repos to folders. For instance, cd /Users/user/Desktop/git_project;git clone –depth 1 $ORIGIN

Thanks!

Status

Developer, bugs, and issues are being reported at the GitHub page mentioned above. The major issues at the time of writing are the lack of project management features (it seems to have been lost in the mix) and the fact that the app uses a version of Git that doesn’t support some major features that many modern GUI-based tools now offer. Hopefully, the developers will find a way to implement these two features soon.
